FACTS ABOUT HOMELESSNESS

According to The Atlanta Mission, a non-profit organization located in Atlanta since 1938 that provides shelter to more than 950 men, women and children a day:

  • Homelessness usually occurs due to a catastrophic life event such as losing a job, loved one, the ability to work, eviction, addiction, domestic violence, major health condition.

  • In America, 39% of the homeless population is under 18 years of age, of that 39% nearly half are 5 years of age or younger.

  • More than 49,000 homeless Americans are Veterans.

 

The Atlanta Journal Constitution printed in March 2018 that Atlanta was ranked as having the 4th neediest city in America.

 

Over 7,000 men, women and children are homeless in the metro Atlanta area:

  • 41% are in emergency shelters

  • 28% are in transitional housing

  • 31%  are living on the street
